14. Back to Khartoum: Turning point for Sudan's civil war?Вт, 25 мар[-/+]
Категория(?)  Автор(?)
Nearly two years on, it’s back to Khartoum for Sudan’s civil war. The forces of junta leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan are ousting those of ally-turned-foe Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo from key points. The leader of the RSF militia can instead point to gains in North Darfur province. We ask why we're seeing these shifting alliances that are redrawing the frontline, whether it’s a turning point and whether there's any light at the end of the tunnel for the 12 million people displaced by a fratricide conflict that follows the interruption by coups of a revolution that strived to bring democracy to Sudan after decades of strongman rule.

The Sudanese army’s recent advances in the capital of Khartoum are mainly “symbolic”, said Marc Lavergne, head researcher at France’s national center for Scientific research. The Sudanese army and its supporters are celebrating nationwide after reclaiming the presidential palace in Khartoum. Friday's victory marks the army's most symbolic achievement since launching a major counteroffensive against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces last September. Meanwhile, the two-year-old war continues to push civilians into exile. Neighbouring Chad has a long tradition being a refuge for Sudanese people fleeing violence. Some who fled the 2003 war in Sudan are now crossing paths with those who have only just arrived, this as resources are stretched thin.

Mount Kenya rises to an altitude of 5,000 metres, making it the second-highest peak in Africa. However, for several years now, the glaciers it harbours have been disappearing. According to experts, the effects of climate change caused the largest glacier, the Lewis Glacier, to lose nearly 90% of its volume between 1934 and 2010. This glacial melt has significant consequences for the region's wildlife, flora, and human inhabitants.

Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame have expressed their support for a ceasefire in DR Congo after a surprise face-to-face meeting in Qatar. Also, Ghanaian MPs have introduced a new bill in parliament to criminalise witchcraft accusations. Hundreds of people, mainly women, are trapped in so-called witch camps, especially in northern Ghana. Plus, the "Imane Khelif effect" is still going strong in Algeria. The female boxer who made an impression at the Paris Olympics is now inspiring young girls to put on their boxing gloves.
